Can I afford it?

# Chapter 301

The price of opportunity or opportunity costs as they sometimes refer to it in the business world, is a strange bird. It seems like an easy thing, I mean you have a great opportunity right?? Who wouldn’t jump on that! Well maybe you should and maybe you shouldn’t. There is a cost no matter who you are, and this is even more true the less you believe me.

For people like me, the cost is glaring me in the face, because my house is full, can’t add another thing. The only things that can be added are those things that are filling in the newly vacated spots in my house. I use the house metaphor because nearly everyone’s house is full to overflowing in the USA. You literally cannot add anything unless you get rid of or store something else. Your whole life is like this too. You are already overclocked and don’t have enough down time. Think about it man! Like, WHEN are you going to do this new opportunity?? Really?

For people not like me, you just don’t have any commitments or long term plans in place that you are already living, but there are still costs to this opportunity. Learning curve is number one. Initiative is number two (and if you find yourself in this paragraph rather than the above paragraph of demographics this is going to be a high cost for you). Networks and integration are three and four, etc etc. To actualize the “opportunity” it will require much of you, perhaps far more than you realize and understand because you don’t regularly experience the costs of long-term commitments.

We have opportunities and they have great potential, but can I afford them?
