Leverage is a key concept in developing people and their potential.  And those leverage points change as a relationship grows.  Parenting for example has at least four leverage points: commander, coach, counselor and consultant. (Author Bob Hostetler uses these particular four C’s of parenting).  A parent plays all four of these roles in their child’s life, but at different times in the course of raising the child.  These stages or leverage points overlap and don’t have extremely tight boundaries.  If a parent gets stuck in any one of these leverage points, he or she will do the child a great disservice and affect the child’s development and potential.  Ah-ha, I see that you understand now why it’s important . . . yes indeed.

In Leadership Development, as in parenting, the stage of development will determine the tools necessary and where the leverage should be applied.
